Discover the art
The name TĀRAI (pronounced Tah-rye) is a powerful acknowledgment of the craft itself. In Te Reo Māori, Tārai means "to shape" or "to fashion" – a direct reference to the purposeful hand-shaping and meticulous work involved in bringing each unique piece to life on the lathe. It is a name that honors the ancient traditions of craftsmanship while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.

From the Heart of Manawatū to the Slopes of Puketāpapa
Glenn began his journey in the picturesque Manawatū region, an area whose name (Manawatū - "heart standing still") reflects the breathtaking beauty of its natural landscape. This early connection to the land instilled a deep reverence for New Zealand's unique timber heritage. Now, from his studio nestled on the slopes of Puketāpapa (Mt Roskill) in Auckland, he brings decades of passion and skill to every curve and grain.
The beauty of wood, handcrafted
Every piece of wood that enters TARAI Studio is treated as a taonga (Treasure). Through the rhythm of the lathe and the touch of skilled hands, the Mauri (life force or essence) of the timber is honoured and brought forth.
